Tashkent

TASHKENT

a city where ancient history meets modern architecture, green avenues and the rhythm of a capital. The East reveals itself anew here.

About the city

Tashkent is the capital of Uzbekistan and the largest city in Central Asia. It stands in the foothills of the Western Tian Shan on the Chirchiq river and is home to more than three million people.

The present city took shape after the 1966 earthquake: wide avenues, a metro and Independence Square stand next to the Khast Imam ensemble, Chorsu bazaar and the old mahallas.

Routes to Samarkand, Bukhara and the Fergana Valley start here. For a visitor Tashkent is both the gateway and a day of its own: Barakhan madrasa, the applied arts museum, the Japanese garden, an evening on Amir Temur Square.
